Masonry is just one of the many building materials available for construction projects. Here are some comparisons between masonry and other common building materials:

A.  Masonry vs. Wood:

Masonry is a more durable and fire-resistant material than wood, which can be more susceptible to rot, insect damage, and fire. However, wood is often less expensive and easier to work with, making it a popular choice for smaller masonry construction projects or for aesthetic purposes.

B.  Masonry vs. Steel:

Steel is a strong and durable material that can support heavy loads and withstand harsh weather conditions. However, steel is typically more expensive than masonry and may not offer the same level of insulation properties, which is important in Oakville and Ontario in general where we can experience very chilly winters.

C.  Masonry vs. Concrete:

Masonry and concrete are similar materials, as they are both made from cement and aggregates. However, masonry is typically used for smaller construction projects, while concrete is used for larger projects such as bridges and highways.

Case Study

At Masonry Oakville, one of our recent projects involved assisting a homeowner near Morrison Road, who was considering different materials for a new front façade and entry pillars. Initially leaning toward wood cladding and aluminum posts, the homeowner opted for a more timeless and durable solution after a consultation with our experienced masonry contractors. We recommended a combination of natural stone veneer and traditional red clay brick—materials known not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their ability to withstand Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles. According to a 2023 report by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre, brick and stone can last well over 75 years with minimal maintenance, whereas wood requires regular refinishing and is more susceptible to moisture and pest damage.

The final result was a visually striking entrance that seamlessly blended with the historic character of the surrounding Oakville homes. The masonry upgrade significantly boosted the property's curb appeal and likely its resale value—homes in Oakville with similar masonry enhancements have seen property value increases of 5–10%, based on local real estate data from the Oakville Milton District Real Estate Board. The homeowner also reported improved insulation and reduced noise transfer from the street, both passive benefits of high-density masonry construction. This project stands as a great example of how choosing brick and stone over synthetic or lightweight materials can provide lasting structural integrity, beauty, and long-term value.

As you can see, masonry units offer some remarkable benefits over other materials in certain types of constructions and applications.  For a free consultation or to discuss your requested masonry services, contact us at Masonry Oakville to learn more.
