Welcome to Oakville Masonry, a proud Canadian-owned and operated that started small but has now expanded our masonry services to and areas.  We focus on all types of brick and stone work and serve Oakville and surrounding areas.  Whether you need a new walkway, a complete home addition, a chimney repair, a new pool deck or anything in between, we’ve not only done it all, we’ve reached a point where we execute our jobs with such precision and care, that it’s become an art form.  We hope you see it in our work too.  If you’re looking for superior craftsmanship done with painstaking care and skill, look no further than Oakville Masonry.

Great craftsmanship is the foundation to the path of becoming one of the best local masonry companies in Oakville, but that is not all we’re proud of.  Our unwavering commitment to customer service is paramount in our goal to become the go-to expert masonry company in Oakville.  What does customer service entail, from our view?

Here’s how we stand apart:

Excellent communication: this is the basis of any good relationship.  A lack of communication results in misunderstandings, frustrations and resentment.  We first and foremost listen to our clients and ask a variety of questions - what their service needs are, why they want that service, when do they need it for, what are their expectations, and a few other questions to get down to the nitty-gritty of why they contacted us in the first place.  We pair this with our extensive years of experience to formulate a plan for what’s best for that structure or building, and share that plan with our client for approval.  For example, a client may ask for their entire backyard to be covered in stone, but their budget is limited and does not allow for that.  Instead of foregoing stone completely, we might make suggestions such as applying a more budget-friendly concrete deck and adding stone accents to create a beautiful and unique look.  Our masonry work is solid, but our plans are flexible.  Our communication continues throughout the project, and does not end until the customer is satisfied.

Integrity: learning a new trade like masonry is doable, but learning to do it with precision and skill is another thing.  If you have a newbie brick and stone mason, it’s not necessarily the kiss of death for your project provided they are properly supervised.  Then again, there are some “experienced” brick workers who spend years making the same mistakes or don’t have the ambition to improve their craft, so they would lay the bricks or stones hastily, improperly mix the mortar, apply the wrong amount of mortar or any other sloppy work that threatens the entire structural integrity of the wall, building or structure.  We’re proud to say Oakville Masonry employs the best in the trade who have trained under highly regarded brick and stone workers, and who themselves have honed their masonry services to perfection.

Experience: this ties into the previous point that the right experience can yield a highly skilled craftsperson vs. the wrong experience creating a sloppy tradesperson.  All of our Oakville Masonry stone and bricklayers have been carefully vetted and trained under the best to provide a wide variety of masonry services Oakville residents and business owners may need.  Years of on-the-job training and experience have produced a power team of masons who will do the job right.  Experience allows us to know, for example, how to mix the mortar properly, how to apply it properly between the bricks and how to lay them properly for the strongest and most durable structure.

Here are a couple of questions we get asked:

A.  Why do we need brick restorations or repairs?

On one end of the scale, there is a cosmetic preference to living or working in a beautiful environment including the home or building.  On the other end of the scale is that faulty bricks can cause further structural damage or spalling which can potentially injure people.

B.  How do we decide between brick or stone?  Which one is better?
This is an individual decision that must be made by the client based on preference, budget and specific project.  Having said that, there are some features with brick and stone that can be highlighted to help guide the decision.

  1. Brick - relatively inexpensive, durable in itself (but mortar adjoining the bricks may be the first thing that falls apart), eco-friendly and low maintenance.
  2. Stone - very durable, is naturally cool so great in the summer but not very insulating in cold weather, material and labour are more costly than with brick, but creates a very beautiful and unique look to the building, wall or walkway.

C.  What other services do you provide?

A lot.  Here are just a few:

  • Brick and stone work including retaining walls
  • Chimney and fireplace restoration and repairs
  • Walkways and steps
  • Parging
  • Waterproofing
  • Home and building additions
  • Pool decks
  • Accent posts and columns

Frequently asked questions (FAQs):
what are the advantages of using masonry for construction?
Masonry is known for its durability, fire resistance, and low maintenance requirements.  It also provides good insulation and can add value to a property.  A bonus advantage is its aesthetic appeal that adds to the physical beauty of a building.
is masonry expensive?  How long does masonry construction take?
The cost of masonry construction can vary depending on the materials used, the size and complexity of the project, and other factors.  These factors also determine how long a project can take, along with weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.  A small project, such as a patio or walkway, may take a few days to complete, while a larger project, such as a building, could take several months or more.  Masonry is generally considered a good long-term investment due to its durability and low maintenance requirements.
what is a retaining wall used for?  how do i maintain it?
Retaining walls are often built to create more usable space on sloped or uneven terrain, prevent erosion, and provide structural support for buildings or other structures.  In the City of Oakville, a building permit is required to build certain retaining walls.

To maintain your retaining wall and ensure its longevity, here are some tips:

  1. Regularly inspect your retaining wall for any signs of damage, such as cracks, bulges, or leaning.  Addressing these issues early can prevent further damage to the wall or surrounding structures.
  2. Check the drainage system of the wall to ensure it is working properly.  A poorly designed or clogged drainage system can cause water to build up behind the wall, putting pressure on the structure and potentially causing it to fail.
  3. Clean the retaining wall periodically to prevent the buildup of dirt, debris, and plant growth, which can weaken the wall over time.  Use a soft-bristled brush or a pressure washer to clean the surface of the wall.
  4. If your retaining wall is made of natural stone or concrete, consider sealing it to protect it from the elements and prevent staining.  A sealant can also help prevent water from seeping into the wall and causing damage.
  5. Avoid planting trees or other large plants near the retaining wall, as their roots can grow into the structure and cause damage.
  6. If you notice any damage or signs of wear and tear on your retaining wall, contact a professional contractor to assess the situation and make any necessary repairs.
